This is Jenna Barry on August 7th, 2024. I'm with Diane De Benedictus, and Diane is going to tell us about Medford Square. Medford Square, like I just was telling you, it was a great place to be. Um I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and

00:00:19.360 - 00:00:35.869

the square just had so much to offer. I we we go down on the weekend, spend a Saturday, the entire day there. Um From here to the from the library. If you start at CVS, we had a grocery store, um, Liberty Market, and then we had

00:00:35.869 - 00:00:55.090

where Colleen's is was a Brigham's, uh, across the street where Roland's jeweler and everything is was a Chinese peeing on the Mystic. It was called stores shoe stores we had about 2 or 3. Uh, children's specialty shoe stores, you know, Tom McCanns, we had a bowling

00:00:55.090 - 00:01:17.559

alley, we had, um, plenty of sub shops and pizza papainos. We had a movie theater, 3 theaters, 33. What? Yeah, it's crazy. Um, all kinds, we had like 3 large department stores, a couple of specialty women's stores, and special 2 men's stores. All kinds of stuff.

00:01:17.599 - 00:01:34.819

You could just go down and spend the entire day there was great, you know, you just, we had a record store, which no one knows what records are now, but Yeah, it was awesome, jewelry stores. When did it start changing? I'd say in the 80 late

00:01:34.819 - 00:01:50.400

80s. When they put metal Glen Mall in a lot of the stores started to feel the. Impact of that and just the kind of all up and left and sad. So it's a great place to hang out. Like I said, it could go down, you know,

00:01:50.529 - 00:02:02.569

and I do, we could go down there 8 years old, you don't have to worry about anything. We would go down our friends, we'd walk and just the whole day right next to the square, yeah. It's awesome. Sounds great. Yeah.
